Love, Actually

Before you all start making any assumptions and jump into conclusions, this has nothing to do with 'love' nor does it have anything to do with the movie. This is a different kind of love. The love that comes by habit and expression instead of feelings and emotions. Most of us might have heard or even used something like "I just loveeeeeee coca cola!!" seriouslyy??? Is that the best thing we can get, the one thing for which we would give up just anything!!! It is like perfection has been defined and no scope for anything better.

Ever wondered how we just love everything. We all just loveeed the zoozoos (whatever happened to the cute little dog??). We just keep the things we like on top, right at the pinnacle…and move on, one thing after another. We all loved the Indian cricket team during the aussie tour but not during the T20 world cup. Maybe because we are impatient, maybe because we are unsatisfied… but then isn’t that why we are so good. We are impatient, we move on if things are not our way, we don’t settle for compromises and that’s why the world fears us and Obama has to give a speech against us. We are moving fast and we want the world to keep up with us.

So what happens when we really like something, something that just comes from beyond our sphere of imagination, something that is worth it, will we still just ‘love’ it. Who the heck cares…we’ll still really really loveee it or simply just create a new word, something techno or geeky (I just geeeeeek it!!!). So for now, let’s just love what we love and get on being selfishly impatient over-enthusiastic achievers.

  1. You speak for yourself :P I never say I love anything and everything. Infact no guy in his right ming usually says that. I've seen a lot of girls say that often though :) Frankly, its just a manner of speaking, nothing really to bother about. Instead of 'i like that', people exaggerate by saying 'i love that'. When they really love something, dont worry people will know that they do :D In a way, you can see if people really love it, or are just saying they like something......

  3. My argument might stem from my intrinsic character flaw to counter what others write but it is thus: it's great that we say we LOVED a movie to express extreme liking for the movie, the use of the word love as an exaggeration points towards love being held as extremely valuable to most people. Since we value life, "the pain is killing me", is an effective exaggeration. More the number of people who use the word love "loosely", more the number of people who believe that love is of high value.
A simpler take is that it's just another usage, courtesy the evolution of a language.

  6. I think its just a way of saying things nothing more than that ; do u want to say it undermines the so - called 'true love' between ppl ?

  8. @mohit: not exactly 'true love', rather was pointing at how little value we actually give to everything...it is good as well as bad.

  9. It is understood from the context that we dont mean 'the love' when we are reffering to a dog, so its ok, it means a liking which i compare to love, as for a fellow being; it means extreme liking and the fact that one uses the word love to achieve this effect actually is testimony that we percieve others to value love and hence use the word to get the desired effect.
I however am now more convinced of my other take, meaning is always contextual, love pizza, love dogs, love sleeping are perfect uses of the word 'love' but differ in meaning from love my country, love freedom which again is different from onu's love for kasi. It might be wrong to doubt the intellect of those who use 'love' with everything, perhaps they consider others capable enough to get the context.

  10. its like "love" as a word is of high importance.. its better than "like"..so we use it to distinguish b/w things which are actually a step ahead of the crowd...like the zoozoos ..it was the best among the ads at that point of time so ppl loved it :) ..can be compared to so called "true love" also.. u love the person most among the age grp or sex...

  11. @salil: everything is contextual only, no dispute there. and neither are ppl who use it often, less shallow than the rest. Just the thought that giving undue importance to some things and instant leaving them as easily, it could be reasons for high rate of innovation as well as result in high rates of depression. usage of words is but just the outer part of it.

  12. @arindam: agreed...but everything is so 'high' importance?

  16. What's with the deleted post? Don't stop the free flow of thoughts :-()........

I was of the view we don't love anything anymore in today's world. Who has the time to love anything? Or for that matter hate anything? Love is not even in the list of top 100 used words. I do not hold pessimistic thoughts about love but i wonder whether it exists. Everything in life is just a give and take relationship consciously or subconsciously. Sometimes we don't want us to realize that and feel sad about it. But the truth still persists and we are still those reason bound individuals for whom love lies somewhere behind.
